SLow performance issues

Postby ricostuart » Thu May 31, 2012 4:05 pm

Hi all,

I have a readynas nv+ running with a 1gb memory upgrade. I have a 1tb HDD (single only at the moment) installed. I have transmission running also.

I have found that the performance of the unit quite low - transmission takes 5-10sec to refresh, add torrents, etc. Download speeds are good however.

The main performance problem right now is that I use the unit as a data storage for movies, etc.It is directly connected via cat5e to the router. When watching a video off the server directly, every once in a while it pauses video. It can be once an hour, or a couple of times an hour. More ofthen than not, I have noticed if it slows down once, it will do it again a few times, then run fine. This is for standard def videos (600-700mb in size) and for HD videos (upto 12gb). I have this problem with my macbook air runnign osx, win7 via wifi as well as an XBMC unit (openelec) connected to the router via cat5e.

Can anyone suggest why this might be?

Thanks!

What firmware are you running?
Are you downloading torrents while you are streaming the video?
Are you streaming with ReadyDLNA or accessing the folder over CIFS or AFP?

I would look at the network stats on the Nas, and see if there is anything odd there. Also check the disk health.

Using latest beta firmware (tried the latest release also). I am downloading torrents while watching vids, but not always. Infact most of the time not. The steaming is done over CIFS (samba) on the xbmc.

Disk health is not the best tbh - there are about 165 bad sectors on the disk. Cant upgrade it for a couple of weeks. Will replace the 1tb drive with 2x2tb drives. However, that I dont think will impaact the speed. At least it didnt on my previous server (custom built using an old P4 system running ubuntu).

This would be V1 (running 4.1.x firmware)? or the V2 (running 5.x.x)

Upgrading to 2 drives will probably increase the speed (it did on my Pro). Bad sectors will also hurt throughput.

I'd solve the disk problem first, and circle back to the streaming performance.

Please start your own thread. NAS models and networks vary, often it creates a lot of confusion if we have multiple conversations on the same thread.
