Ok, so maximum 8tb expansion, no matter the start or ending point, I didn't know this was the limitation. Good to know, although a bit strange (can anyone explain why, and might this change with future firmware upgrades?) :) But it definitely means I will want to start with 5 drives, so i can get the max out of the expansion limit.

Oh well, it just sucks that you set yourself up for playing with the new stuff, and then you cannot. I will wait for the replacement, and do as first planned! Thank you for your patience.

Someone with a technical background can probably explain it better than I can, but I believe it has something to do with Linux. There is an 8TB expansion limit and another expansion limit of 16TB maximum volume. Obviously this one will not apply to a 6 bay unit with 3TB drives as you have a max gross volume of 15TB. This only applies to on-line expansion. Off Line expansion which is accomplished by the factory default (with of course the downside of wiping the disks when it does it) gets you past both.

After 4TB drives become available, on the HCL and reasonably priced, some users will hit the 16TB max volume.

As your volume increases in size, you might want to consider a back up strategy as well.
Remember - the NAS is not a backup plan.
