Ultra 6 Plus and Fans!

Postby xiaorrulez » Wed Jul 04, 2012 12:18 pm

Just got an Ultra 6 Plus, loving it.

However, the fan is a bit to loud for my liking.

I have Googled and found the back fan is a 120mm? And the PSU fan looks to be a 60mm? (Although I have read that it's not replaceable, correct?)

Might swap it out for a E8600 which is much faster, with same TDP 65W. Can be done? Voiding any shred of warranty I have left of course.

Just wondering what the CPU fan is like. What height, width and length max should I be looking for?

Thanks for the help guys. Haven't had this much fun since I discovered how to do a death wish RAID!

First, yes the rear fan is a 120mm and should be fairly quiet. I am not sure about the CPU fan. I know there have been other posts in the past about replacing that fan and the problems in finding one thin enough. (Note: the Ultra6 Plus has the same hardware as the older discontinued Pro Pioneer and Pro Business Edition so include them when searching posts. The new Pro6 has the faster E5300 processor and business features to differentiate it from the Ultra6 Plus. There are some reports of Ultra6 Plus units showing up with the E5300 as well).

Unless you are running a lot of addon, it is extremely unlikely you will notice any speed difference with the faster processor. The Ultra6 Plus is capable of more than saturating a gigabit network so your network is now the limiting factor on file transfer speed.
Remember - the NAS is not a backup plan.

Thanks for your reply.

My unit is running a E2160 at 1.8GHz, with a stick of 1GB DDR2 ram.

I've installed Plex and it's amazing. But if multiple people are watching, it might struggle. I have also read and want to try out transcoding with the Ultra 6 Plus. That's why I think I would benefit from a speedier CPU. Plus, the 45nm parts run cooler idle, and draw less power while idle.

My goal is to make the ReadyNAS more quiet than my full sized tower computer, think that is a resonable task. (It has 4 120mm fans, plus a 210mm). You are right, compared to the CPU fan, the 120mm is rather quiet (however there is a slight clicking sound). That's why replacing the CPU fan is my no.1 prio. (I thought might as well do the CPu while I'm at it)

I do have a Q6600 just lying around, but I think the 105W TDP might kill a NAS or two :)

Before replacing the CPU in your Ultra 6 Plus (yes this does void the warranty), please download the logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs) and check bios_ver.log. If the BIOS is not up to date (http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=360290#p360290) please update the BIOS:

To update the BIOS install this add-on: http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin

Installation is via Add-Ons > Add New in Frontview.

NB: A ReadyNas is not an excuse not to have a backup. Fire, theft, multiple disk failures, other hardware failure, floods, user negligence etc. can all result in loss of data.
