Data Volume not rebuilding? Getting nervous...

Postby uutes » Wed Jul 04, 2012 8:11 pm

I have ReadyNAS Pro, with 6 2 TB drives with dual redundancy enabled.

I recently was receiving incrementing SMART errors on drive one, so I removed it to test it with Seagate's seatools to see if I needed to RMA it.

It passed all tests, so I replaced the drive.

The log says the ReadyNAS detected the drive as a new drive.

The last log entry says that the data volume will be rebuilt with the new drive - that was on the 1st of July.

The status>health page list disk one as dead, and the icon flashes yellow.

I'm wondering what my next step should be, if any. I would think the volume should have rebuilt by now.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance.

You hot unplug the first disk, it will do data recovery after you re-install again, please wait a moment, it should be change to OK.

I have a question, what is SMART error on your disk?

The SMART errors were sector reallocations.

Your statement confused me. Reinstall what the disk? I've replaced the disk, five days ago. The log says the volume will be rebuilt using the disk, but it doesn't seem to be happening.

Do I need to reboot the ReadyNAS or something?

FYI - I lost patience, and decided to reboot the ReadyNAS.

After boot-up, the Home page indicates that the volume is rebuilding.

Looks like I'll be good to go in a few hours.

Sorry! it is not re-install, it is re-insert.
The SMART errors were sector reallocations, you had better use a good driver.

Thansk for your psot...I too am migrating from 2TB to 3 TB, and had the exact same issue, nowhere that I saw did it indicate to reboot the thing, in fact it said you could swap the drive with or without pwoering it off. It detected the new drive, said it would rebuild with disk 1...and then gave em zero status it was actually doing anything.

the unit indicated disk 1 was still the Hitachi and was bad, but the Radiator software did detect the new WDC on that channel...and the unti wasn't going Idle...i thought ti was working in the background...so 24 hours later, I figure ok it shoulda been done by now, wtf.

So I look for estimates on time or ways to monitor status and come up blank.

Then I see this, and am happily rebuilding after reboot at 65 some odd mb/s and am sitting at 3.3% eta 7.5 hours.

thank you, thank you.

One drive to go, then I can expand

So semi related question, I took one of the 2 TB drives out and decided to try to stick it in my EVA 9150 to see if it'll like it...but I havent turned it on to format it yet thinking that if the rebuild fails, i could re-replace the disk in the unit and it would be like nothing happened....

Likely? or is that false hope and just go ahead and format it?

Once the restripe starts, the old drive is out of sync with the array. So it would be risky to put the old drive back.

Though I think I'd still wait for everything to settle down before I reformat the old one.

If your old drive has reallocated sectors (esp., with an increasing count) then it probably would be best to RMA it, and use the refurbished replacement in the EVA. (Alternatively keep it for use as a spare).
