Should I ditch the Bufalo Nas for ReadyNAS? AD issues!

Postby ittim » Wed Jul 25, 2012 7:02 am

Hi,

I've just bought a bufalo nas and despite the claims of AD intergration it is quite simply terrible.

I'm thinking of exchanging it for a Readynas.

What I need is Ad intergration so I can manage permissions on folders. I'd also like to be able to manage permissions in sub folders. (ie set individual folders to not inherit parent permissions)

Is this something I can do with a ready nas? I need 2 TB but i'm unsure which models are best suited. Its going to be used primarily in a small workgroup.

Thanks

Yes the ReadyNAS can, and the Pro2 or Pro4 would work however I'd recommend the Pro4 for it's performance and upgrading the capacity later on if you need to.

Thanks Grievous,

Well the Buffalo has been returned so I'll probably pick one up.
Thanks

Personally I'd generally recommend the Pro 6 but that may be overkill if you don't anticipate your amount of data you have to grow all that rapidly.

With the Pro 2, 2x2TB would give you a 1.8TB volume.
With the Pro 4, 4x2TB would give you a 5.4TB volume
With the Pro 6, 6x2TB would give you 9TB in single-redundancy or 7.2TB using dual-redunancy (dual-redundancy is available on the 6-bay units and requires at least 4-disks to be installed. It is not available on the 2-bay or 4-bay).

The Pro 4 is a good choice. You can start out with two disks and add more later as you need more space.

Take a look at X-RAID2 in Action (this shows single-redundancy).

Thanks, The Pro 2 seems sufficient, The mirrored drives should give us good enough performance. The Pro 4 just seems out of our price range.

My main concerns are those listed above re the active directory and a post I saw regarding the Readynas losing AD conenctions when the AD server re-boots. We take backups every night of our AD Controller and its on its own (for the time being) so I'm a little worried about having the same problem...

If I were to go for a Pro 4 would these drives give me equal or better performance than the Pro 2?

Those drives are on the compatibility list: http://www.readynas.com/hcl

The Pro 2 CPU (CPU Specs of the ReadyNAS) is a little faster than that of the Pro 4.

Thank you for the info. Am I really likely to notice the difference between a Pro2 and a Pro4? They seem fairly even. (only had a quick scan through to be fair) I presume its the same firmware on thebox?

Yes same firmware. Not that much difference in the CPU speed though the Pro 2 is a little faster so with 2 disks, the Pro 2 would be faster. With four disks in the Pro 4 for some things its faster than the Pro 2 but for others where the CPU not the disks is the bottleneck the Pro 2 is slightly faster. There's not much between them.

Of course the Pro 2 has a USB3 port on the front whereas the Pro 4 has no USB3 ports.

Hello again,

Ok, I have my ReadyNas and I'm having trouble.

I have a folder set up with access to a group. Ie Sales.

So my sales users have got R/W access and nobody else has which is fine.
I have a sub folder in sales called 'test' I want to add a single user permision to the test folder to bob so that Sales and Bob can access the folder.

In a windows environment Bob should be able to access the test folder by going \\readynas\Nas\Sales\Test but he is denied permission.

Can I get around this at all?

Not sure whether this is possible or not as my ReadyNAS units are not connected to my AD. Have you had a look at http://www.readynas.com/?p=1987?

Thanks Mdgm,

Yes I have thank you, however even that seems a little odd. Using the deny permissions on domain users just made it worse. When I set it us as I would in a Windows Environment it worked a lot better.
