Ready NAS Duo Newbie

Postby Greys » Tue Aug 07, 2012 10:00 am

So I purchased The ready nas duo v1 last year around novemeber. I finally got around to trying to set it up. I have run across some issues and i was not able to find anything on the boards I also opened a ticket but not sure if would really hear a response since i am not home and do not know my serial #

I inserted a Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003 2TB 5900 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive into it. I noticed that it started to beep every 15 seconds I left it alone for a few hours but when i got back it was still beeping. I also noticed on my Raidar software that it was not able to see it in a rescan. When i shut it down and removed the drive and try a rescan i was able to see it, it said it was a bad disk.

the next day I then inserted 2 new Seagate st2000dm001 drives. I noticed that the fan was running hard the beeps were not as frequent but it was once in a while. I left it over night and woke up this morning to the fan still running hard. and the occasional beep. I was not able to see it in the Raidar software. I had to go to work. I was hoping that someone can shed some light as to what is going on.

Thank you

Are you sure you mounted hard disks into the NAS properly?

not to sound like an *** but there truly is only 1 way to mount those disks. if you try to mount the drives in the cage backwards it will not work. just saying

If it's mounted with 4 screws each and inserted to the end. Locks closing easily with nice click.

I can assure you that it is mounted correctly it is not the issue. If you read my post it does not work properly with the drives mounted. even new ones. again i will state it is not a mounting issue

looked over some other forum posts and it seems that i may have to do more research on this. I know my model maybe a bit outdated but it was purchased 8 months ago. it seems that these forums are a bit dead. and the best/only post is someone who cannot read a post and puts in a dumb comment about me making sure my disks are mounted properly. maybe my title on my topic may have appear that i dont know anything. but i find it laughable that I am getting a best buy response like " are you sure your drives are mounted correctly"

So if someone has constructive feedback and not some insulting answer like "is your drives mounted correctly" i will be waiting

Perhaps not what you are looking for, but I suggest you wait for a response from Netgear Support.

BTW, there are more posts here than any other forum I follow. They are clearly not "a bit dead".

You didn't identify the status of your LED indicators, you perhaps should check this: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=324

I think that the Duo v1 does not have a speaker - if my understanding is correct, than the beeps would have to be coming from the disk drives.

I didn't say I was sure, I said AFAIK the duo has no speaker. Also, suggesting that the noise was coming from the drives doesn't rule out the possibility that a hardware failure in the duo isn't the root cause.

The hard drives don't have speakers either, but there are failure modes that sound like beeps.

Look here: http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/e ... Q/174571en
Abnormal noises include:

High-pitched whining sound can be an indication of abnormal function.
Noises can be caused by mounting issues. This is due to either a high frequency vibration in the mounting hardware, or a potential drive failure.
Repeated, regular tapping, grinding or beeping...

and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gphls4tfX4o

googling on "seagate beeping" gets quite a few hits.

So again, I suggest waiting on support, since it is quite possible you will need an RMA. I would also suggest testing the drives in a PC with seatools (and perhaps see if there is newer firmware available for the drives).

You get 90 days of free phone support after purchase, however that window is up since you left the duo sitting on the shelf for so long.

You don't need to pay for on-line support though, and your duo is still under warranty. Open a ticket at support.netgear.com.
