Windows Vista Issue

Postby boblam » Mon Nov 20, 2006 7:56 pm

I installed Windows Vista Ultimate. I am noticing that the computer is constantly accessing the ReadyNAS. It is using about 50% CPU. Any thoughts to help me figure out what it is doing?

my only guess would be some kind of indexing.

Assume you dont have a profile directory on the NAS box?
Or have changed your folders to point to it? i.e My Music redirects to NAS?
Any AV products doing real time protection that could be hitting it? Especially if you have mapped drives etc.

I do have folders pointing to it - My document, my music, etc. and I have mapped drives. Currently just have the basic install with Office 2007. Since their is so much communication between the PC and the NAS device, it makes the setup very slow.

What is the issue with having these folders on the NAS?

Wow, 50% of your desktop CPU is being used all the time? What process is using up all that CPU?

Upon further review, there were several off line folders trying to synchronize by default. These folders contained all of my music files, photos, etc. I believe the issue was related to that. I turned off synchronizing off line files and the problem went away. I guess it was trying to make a copy (probably in the neighborhood of 400GB) to my local hard drive. I still see about 30% use of the CPU with gadgets, indexing, etc. according to the CPU gadet. I really only see about 5% utilization according to task manager. I guess the gadet isn't very reliable either.

Would be interested to see if you can make a whole folder available offline on the NAS. When I try Vista will error with files are already in use.

I also then get the constant data transfer in the background as it tries to sync. It is even more fun since I work over VPN alot of the time using a 3G data card. Transfers over 1GB a day trying to sync! I have had to disable offline files for now in Vista. Offline files to a Win2k3 box work as expected.

I think there is a fundamental problem with offline files and the Readnas - probably Samba related.

I have tried on 4 different Vista machines now including totally clean builds, but would like someone else to confirm they have the problem.

I am using the latest firmware for the ReadyNas.

Thanks

Does the Infrant moderator have a view on this? Shouldn't you be looking for a resolution as well? This will affect all new sales since Vista goes live to businesses today.

We're trying to talk with the Samba guys to see if they know of any issues. I'll post back when I find out.

Not sure if this is relevant but I picked up on this elsewhere...

If the drive is using SMB, change authentication from "NTLMv2" to "NTLMv2 when required" in the local security policies.

I have read in newsgroups that Vista hangs because it is trying again and again when the authentication fails which I could not repro with Beta 2 to RC2, I received a prompt at some point. If it repros for you, you should bug it.

I see the following options (if I'm on the correct policy setting):

I have selected "Send NTLMv2 response only"

Other options are:
Send LM & NTLM responses
Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated
Send NTLM response only
Send NTLMv2 response only. Refuse LM
Send NTLMv2 response only. Refuse LM & NTLM

I am looking at the Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level properties policy under Local Policies, Security Options.

Thoughts on which option to try?

Is there any news here?

I am hoping to buy an NV+ in the near future.

One key usage would be to store a lot of data (JPG, AVI, etc.) on the NAS and to maintain copies on PCs as offline files.

Since these won't be modified frequently, I wouldn't expect much overhead in synchronization.

Right now, I'm using XP, so I hope there shouldn't be a problem (right?).

But I'd like to know if I'm going to have a big problem (or have to change my plans) if I upgrade my PCs to Vista.
