Service Action to Prevent Premature Power Supply Failures in ReadyNAS NV/NV+
A small percentage of ReadyNAS NV (revision B) and NV+ owners with low-noise fanless power supply unit (PSU) may encounter a premature failure of the PSU due to elevated temperature. The ReadyNAS systems affected have Serial numbers between 000DA2010FFE and 000DA2016000. If you are unsure if your serial number falls within the hexadecimal range, you can use a hex calculator. (Click hex and overwrite the '0' with your serial number and click dec. If the number falls in the range of 58552553470 and 58552573952, then you should proceed with this service action.) Owners of ReadyNAS NV revision A who have replaced their original fan with the newer fanless PSU could be affected as well.
Infrant advises all customers who have these ReadyNAS systems to install an add-on, downloadable at http://www.infrant.com/download/addons/ ... cs_1.1.bin , to lower the power supply temperature. This add-on will increase the system unit's idle fan speed from 1600 RPM to 2100 RPM to increase the air flow through the power supply, and will increase the noise characteristic of the unit slightly. Simply download the add-on and install it at the System -> Update -> Local tab in FrontView and reboot the ReadyNAS twice. Owners of earlier ReadyNAS NV with newer fanless PSU may find that this add-on will not work. You can install the EnableFanMinRPMOverride add-on from http://www.infrant.com/wiki/index.php/Add-Ons instead and specify 2100 as the minimum fan RPM.
Alternatively, if noise is of concern, Infrant has posted a step-by-step instruction on reversing the fan for optimized cooling at http://www.infrant.com/download/Enhance ... lation.pdf . Only a philips screwdriver is required to do this, and there is no need to elevate the fan speed with the above add-on if you perform this procedure.
Proper cooling is key to prolonging the life of the ReadyNAS as well as reducing any downtime and cost due to the need to replace failed components. Although premature PSU failure occurs in only 0.5% of all systems shipped, Infrant strongly advises all ReadyNAS NV/NV+ users utilizing the fanless PSU to either install the add-on or perform the fan reversal procedure as soon as possible.
