rsync failure

Postby cadditguy » Mon Apr 16, 2007 6:05 am

I am getting a failure on several rsync backup jobs. The log states Error encountered copying data from remote source path nas::files ==> /files/ due to unknown reason. Please see log.

I have searched high and low on the forums for a solution but have yet to find an answer. There are lots of similar issues but none that seem to match my situation. The error message appears after a long list of deleting files. ( I have 'Remove deleted files on backup target' checked). The error states please see log so I download all the logs and look and the backup log for that job and it states exactly the same thing. Which log am I suppose to be inspecting?

One possibility is that I had the login as user administrator but found that that user was deleted by the system (see forum thread 7919, user administrator continually disappears). I added back the user administrator, tested the connection, it connects but the job still fails.

Please post the settings for this rsync job on the client and NAS, then use the Send All Logs button to send the logs to logs@infrant.com. Be sure to include a link to this thread and your forum name. Also, please post a reply to this topic once you've sent the logs, so I can look for it in the logs mail queue.

I rebooted the device and had it perform a volume scan on next boot. It found and fixed some errors. I was able to cancel the backups that had stalled. This morning every backup went through. I have forwarded the logs of the device in case you see an anomaly.

P.S. When it mentions in the backup log to check the log for the backup, which log does it refer to. The backup message and the log for the backup are identical and both refer to check the log.

If you use the Download All Logs link in the system logs page, you'll see the full log for each backup job in the .zip archive.

I did that, this is an excerpt from a log called backup_002.log ( I assume the log for backup job number 2)

Backup failed Fri Apr 6 00:30:15 EDT 2007.

Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from remote source path nas::drawings ==> /drawings/ due to unknown reason. Please see log.

Now when it says "Please see log" which log is this reffering to.

It's actually referring to itself. The specific error will normally not occur at the end of the log since rsync will continue to backup as much as it can despite the error. Searching for lines that start with "rsync" may give you a better idea of the real problem. Feel free to send us the logs at logs@infrant.com if you'd like me to take a look. Be sure to include a link to this thread and your forum name.
