which dynamic dns service do you use?

if you use dyndns.org then it looks like you could piggyback an update via the ReadyNAS Backup feature, by using the Source:Remote Website...

Except there is no way to specify the correct IP address via a backup job.

IP is optional, their server can guess and use that, which works most of the time unless your behind a proxy server.

Code: Select all
IP address to set for the update. If this parameter is not specified, the best IP address the server can determine will be used (some proxy configurations pass the IP in a header, and that is detected by the server). If the IP address passed to the system is not properly formed, it will be ignored and the system's best guess will be used.

this should be enough for most users.

Code: Select all

For those who have their own domain, and do not want to pay for the ddns services (such as dyndns.org), I do have a way work around:

1, With most routers have dyndns.org builtin ddns service, register yourself a account and set it up, so you will finally have a fixed url http://yourname.dyndns.org

2, My isp blocks my port 80 therefore I need to setup my router to forward port 8080 to my internal port 80, now I can access my NV with the following url: http://yourname.dyndns.org:8080

3, I am using zoneedit as my ddns server, its free. Web forwarding is such a cool thing that allow you to translate your url to any name you like with your own domain, my case: http://nas.yourdomain.com forward to http://yourname.dyndns.org:8080

4, Change your dns server in your domain settings to zoneedit's dns server. DONE!

Sorry for my poor English for those who do not understand.

DDNS implementation spec, and pls include CUSTOM DDNS

Postby sbuchanYVR » Mon Nov 27, 2006 6:40 pm

The implementation spec is here:

http://www.dyndns.com/developers/specs/ ... te-api.pdf

Linksys, netgear, d-link do not support the full DDNS spec. The full spec includes a DDNS implementation where you use your domain name .. not one of the provided ones. this is called CUSTOM DDNS .. this is a small applet . .there are unix services that fully support it .. we just need Infrant to certify and ship with a DDNS demon and a UI to configure the .cfg file.

any chance?

Rational: the router implementations are incomplete .. they are for the most part terrible .. the NAS device is powered on all the time, therefore it can wake from sleep every four to 24 hours or so .. and tell TZO or DDNS what the current IP is on the WAN side of the router.

Please!

I use the Linksys BEFSX41 Firewall/Router/VPN and it works great 98% of the time. Every once in a while for no particular reason (maybe 6-8 times/year), it locks up. A simple power cycle resets it. There are most likely more reliable ones out there, but not at this price point IMOHO.

I have the same experience. And if you update the firmware, your configuration is hosed. Other than that, it works fine.

Yoh-Dah,
have you tried the latest version of Linksys firmware? My BEFSX41 is a version 1, and I have had extensive technical issues with it with each version of the firmware since v1.45.3. I kept having to reload this firmware to get it up and running again after each firmware upgrade attempt.

The lastest FW is v1.52.10, and it has been 100% problem free since I flashed to it. Solved my BitTorrent connection problems and a few others as well.

Also, do you know of anyone using the new RVS4000 with Infrant products?

I am thinking about upgrading because presently if I enable jumbo frames on my setup I lose WAN throughput on my router most likely since it is not gigabit. My Dell switch is the only thing attached to the router (oh, and the cable modem), but jumbo frames on my LAN means no WAN. I am assuming this will not be an issue with the RVS4000 since it is 10/100/1000. Thoughts?

I'm on 1.50.18, so I'm a little behind, but since it's been working other than perhaps a reset ever couple of months, I'll probably not mess with it until I have more time. It took me awhile to restore my settings last time

No, but if you do end up getting it, let us know how it works out 8)

DYNDNS WORKING ON NAS!

Postby johnbradley101 » Sat May 19, 2007 4:51 am

I've been trying to do this for a while now, and finally have got success using the Backup job and http urL.

the key thing is to avoid using ? and other symbols in the URL which are not allowed. I got round this problem by using a tinyurl to remove this.

I removed the username and password from the URL so as not to expose my logon details to the world, and entered these in the NAS fields separately.

1. Register with http://www.dyndns.com and setup a dns name

2. use this url and change the hostname at the end to match the one you just created:

http://members.dyndns.org/nic/update?sy ... stname.com

3. Create a tinyurl - Go to:

http://tinyurl.com

and paste the url you created into the box to create your very own tinyurl

4. setup the backup job in the readynas

Create a new backup job.

The source: Remote website
Path: put the tinyurl in here

then enter your username and password in the login and password fields.

Select a destination share - it doesn't matter really. The only thing to remember is that when it is successful, it will store a file which confirms that the update was successful.

Change the backup schedule to your liking and click Apply when you are done.

you should now have a backup job which updates your dns name on a regular basis whilst the NV is running

John, it'll be great if you can resubmit this under User Sumitted Tips. Great job! 8)

The original url was;

http://members.dyndns.org/nic/update?sy ... dyndns.org

tinyurl turned it into;

http://tinyurl.com/32sws5

which all seems right. it does indeed update the dyndns ip address held by dyndns for the domain when I rund th backup job but the backjob remains processing and never ends as well.

regards

good news that the update works.

you should check to make sure you have the latest firmware installed, and time it to see how long it takes for the update to finish. for a clean test, make sure you are not doing anything in the background at all - no file transfers, nothing open, no streaming - and noone logged in other than the admin user, and see how it goes.
