Backup to USB w FAT32 returns error = Read-only file system

Postby redboot » Thu Oct 04, 2007 6:16 am

I've setup a backup to the share "backup" and it works fine, but when I try to backup to an external USB drive (WD 320GB) I get errors saying it's a Read-only file system despite the fact that it's formatted as FAT32.

I even ran GParted to resize the first partition and create a second FAT32 partition, both primary.

The log has:

FULL Backup started. Thu Oct 4 08:58:15 EDT 2007

Thanks for the logs. Try connecting the USB drive to a Windows system and running a filesystem check. When that is complete, cleanly unmount the USB drive (instead of just unplugging it), then try the backup again.

Nope. That didn't help.

I decided to wipe out the stuff that Western Digital puts on their external drives by default. Used GParted to wipe out partitions, created two new, formatted as FAT32. Reattached to an XP system, ran CHKDSK/F on both. Dismounted them using the icon in the system tray. Reattached and tried to run a small job. Still gives same errors.

Do you have another USB drive you could try? That would definitely help us narrow down the cause of the problem.

I swapped out a Western Digital 250GB external USB drive for the Western Digital 320GB USB drive. Formatted two FAT32 partitions using GParted.
The backup now works.
Any suggestions as to why? The 320GB drive (which my/our customer purchased) works in every other Windows / Linux machine I've plugged it into.

The kernel on our current official release is rather old, perhaps the chipset in the enclosure for the 320GB drive is not fully supported? The 4.0 release (which is currently in public beta) has a much newer kernel and may have better support for that drive.

Thanks, I'll follow the progress of that new version.

It might be worth updating the hardware compatibility list in the wiki to add Western Digital MyBook 250GB and indicate that the Western Digital MyBook 320GB is NOT compatible.

I tried, but it seems I am not able to create a login.

I may come off as "preachy", but a HCL is only good if it's actively maintained.

Thanks,
Scott
