RadyNAS as a caching-only nameserver?

Postby marksw » Tue Dec 18, 2007 11:53 am

Hey guys,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question - I couldn't really work out where to post it!

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to set up my ReadyNAS NV+ as a caching-only nameserver? Is there an add-on for it that I've not spotted?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

In fact, if that is possible, is it also possible to run a nameserver (e.g. BIND) on the readynas for local DNS services?

With shell access in 4.0, you could install dnsmasq, it does dns caching, http://www.thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html

Hmmm, sounds like a bit of tinkering - not my strong point!

Thanks anyway :)

Well, setting up bind goes a little bit beyond tinkering in general. ;)

I can confirm that full bind 8 and 9 installations work fine. I currently have bind 9 running on my NV+ with views and several zones. Works great.

There was a recent thread in the forums here, too, where dnsmasq setup was covered. See http://www.infrant.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14356

For me, bind 9 installation was as simple as enabling root SSH in v4, installing the APT add-on, and running "apt-get install bind9". Once done, finish bind9 configuration as you would normally. :D

Thanks for the tip btaroli. I used to use debian and it was a breeze to use... on the whole!

Looks like version 4 of the firmware is a bit unstable at the moment, so I'll be putting this off until that improves :)

Thanks again.

T45 has been doing great for me. I know there have been a few small items in the forums that will probably get addressed before c1p2 goes GA, but not very many as far as I can tell. :)

Ah, well I'm always cautious about these things - I don't have the knowledge to fix things that go wrong!
