It smells like something's burning

Postby alexik » Tue Jun 26, 2007 12:06 pm

As of a few hours ago, I started to smell something like burning plastic coming out of my ReadyNAS NV. After reading around on the forum here (about the guy's that exploded, and the known PSU issue) I did all I could think of:

-Fan reversal
-Fan speed increase update
-Removed the felt dust-guard off the front grill which seemed to be impeding airflow

It's a little fainter, but the smell continues.

Should I just wait till/if it dies? What are my options?

I've already started to pull data off it just in case.

Ok, so probably by the time you smell something burning, it's too late. A day after the initial post, the NAS PSU failed and would only come back on for a few minutes when I reseated the power cable.

The good news is Infrant rocks and is mailing a new PSU. Thanks guys!

The account system is broken.

However, you can submit a ticket without an account.

Ok, got a RMA number for the whole unit... From France, it will cost me an arm & a leg to RMA the whole box. Can't I just get a PSU from you ? I dont want to RMA the whole thing unless I get a NV+ :P

Seriously, any way to "just" get a working PSU ? (and my GB of RAM just arrived today, talk about frustration ;) )

yes I like to know if I can buy a spare psu.
in Europe it's not easy to get speedy service from to us.
and maby my psu will last more than 5 years (I hope)

why a raid?, the disks ged a 5 year warranty, but if it breaks it breaks.

now the psu has some fungi trouble no matter if it brakes in warranty you get a new, otherwise you pay for it (or for the lawer, more expensive)

so I like a spare psu in the drawer so if it breaks I can get to my files in a day (think I can change a psu ,even if careful in 2 hours but), faster then a rma from the states, or a local reseller (shigh).

So why not sell a psu as a service, not needed ok but it buy's a peace of mind.

heh wat do I have on raid if the psu is broken?

You can buy one, on the store page (it's out of stock for now though)
It's damn expensive for what it is btw, thx Infrant... :/

I wanted to take a picture of my burned PSU but couldn't because of the warranty seal. I guess I'll wait after the 4th of July holidays to bug the support. ;)
