Performance/problems with Slim Server on Ready NAS NV+

Postby jfoj » Thu Nov 15, 2007 6:40 pm

New here.

Problem running Slim Server. It worked for a few days and now just will not work. Until is less than 2 weeks old. Only configured unit to move some music on it and test Slim Server with SqueezeBox.

Did have Slim Server running no problem for over 24 hours with a continous loop on music, then problems started, Slim Server kept dropping out.

Every time I turn off the Slim Server, I get a message "Error Stopping Slim Server Service".

When I restart, I get a Slim Server Successfully Started message.

Here is the configuration:

ReadyNAS NV+
2 - 500 GB hard drives
256 MB RAM
Initially had latest non Beta, then upgraded to Beta 4.009b9-p1-T1, unit was working with Slim Server with Beta as I recall.
Slim Server version 6.5.4
Only thing on drives is 2.5 GB of music for testing, no other data.
Not other machines accessing the ReadyNAS or streaming
iTunes streaming is not enabled
DHCP service is disabled

I have removed and reinstalled Slim Server software, still no luck.

Unit is running in basement, very cool location on UPS. 25 C/77F.

Not sure if there is a RAM problem, seems the device does not act as responsive as I would like, maybe this is the way the ReadyNAS is??

Tried both static and dynamic IP addresses. Can ping solidly to ReadyNAS when attempting to access Slim Server and get no response from Slim Server.

Can MAP a drive from an XP machine, however, response seems slow??

Navigating folders once ReadyNAS is Mapped, is quick, no problem streaming music to XP machine using iTunes.

Again, I have nothing to compare performance to.

Do I need to factory default?? Is this a flaky unit?

HELP!!

Update on SS Performance Issue

Postby jfoj » Fri Nov 16, 2007 12:10 pm

I see the post was moved, sorry if I posted in the wrong place originally.

I downloaded the logs and looked at all the errors that were far more in detail than on the standard log view. Many different problems, some appeared to be plug-in related, some were ERROR: Couldn't connect to database! Fatal error: [No such file or directory] Exiting! I am not well verse on the error coding, however, I could tell mostly the errors and back traces were not a good thing.

I was debating on whether to reload Factory Defaults and move on from there, but just happened to check for additional updates. There was a new Beta 4.00b10-p1-T1 [1.00a037] available today, so I decided, why not try it before a Factory Default.

We I was surprised, updated to newest Beta and now the Slim Server is working without a hitch. Seems a bit slow to connected the first time, but I will check it out later.

I will let it roll with my 2.5 GB of music and see if it stays alive for more that 24 hours.

Thanks for anyone who looked at this post and actually put any thought into the problem. Not sure if there was a problem with the Beta release or somehow something became corrupt during an update??

Cross fingers and hope problems do not reappear anytime soon.

I have ~75GB of music on my NV, which is on the same wired network as my SLiMP3 player (not Squeezebox). It takes a while to load my Artists list, and when I access the SlimServer web interface while music is playing, I get (significant) stuttering in my audio. Seems like 10/100 Ethernet should be able to handle this traffic? Any suggestions for performance tweaks?
