SSH again

Postby nobody » Sat Apr 15, 2006 4:45 am

yes - and here another ssh/root open request.

why not open ssh, which could imply loosing all vendor support ?
you could just do two firmware versions (which differ only in the password)
so all the geeks (like me) can peek and poke around but then its ok
to get no support and one version with full support but all doors closed

due to your custom hardware i dont think you have to fear any
product piracy

what about this ?

PS: is it DES with which your fw images are crypted ? perhaps you can give me some bits of the key (lets say the first 8 or 10) to my birthday :-) :-) :-)

Sounds like SSH is coming sooner rather than later, maybe even in P10!?

SSH and rsync revisited

Postby toreolsen » Sun May 14, 2006 11:36 am

SSH would be great. Yoh-dah wrote in response to my question about rsync over SSH:

"You can set this up after we allow shell access, probably sometime in Q2"

(see the original thread with response from Yoh-dah on: http://www.infrant.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight= )

This led me to buy the ReadyNAS NV which is truly an great product. Just waiting for SSH which will make it truly awesome.

Regards,

Tore

I don't own one yet, but if it had ssh support, I'd buy it now. I'm going to post in the backup forum to see if there is a solution my needs outside of ssh support.

Looks pretty sweet otherwise, though.

I'm on the fence for this feature...
SSH like abilities would be cool, so we could make very complex scripts which remotely connect to the device and twiddle bits or what not, as well as low level administration. However it's not the most important thing in the world to me.

Well, I'm really just looking for a way to send data in an encrypted form to the box from a remote location. Any alternate ideas?

SSH

Postby ticklemeozmo » Thu Jun 22, 2006 7:00 pm

Absolutely, I would love to run a cron job, hopefully there will be php or perl support so I can write scripts to interface with a database on a seperate server.

Limited gnu commands would be KILLER.
bash, more/less, vim, grep, find, slocate, sed, perl, md5sum...

I'm filling up just thinking about it...

I've been clammoring for SSH support probably more than anybody. I spend 75% of my day in Unix shells "doing my thang". That being said...

I can't see having THAT much "app" support. PHP, Perl, etc. would add a LOT of complexity, a lot of additional kernel size, and would, no doubt, add more holes and decrease stability. Yes, I would love to have PHP and Perl support, but I wouldn't want it at the expense it would inheriently bring.

Yes. GNU shell commands are what I'm hoping for. cp, rm, mv, ls, rename, and even SSH apps like SFTP, SCP, etc. would be nice.

If the folks over at Infrant are worried about giving up too much "internal" access, maybe even a restricted shell with a chroot at the top level of our share area with limited commands in ./bin and such.

I'm trying to be patient. I know they'll get around to it only when they are sure it's fit for use.

Thanks, in advance, guys!

Add another vote for SSH (SSH2 if possible) - it's crucial for remote file access.
Friend of mine just came over yesterday and he never heard about Infrant so I showed him my X6 and he was really amazed, he decided to buy one then he asked about SSH - after my "it's under development ut it's coming" answer he said he'll wait until SSH becomes available...

Re: SSH

Postby cousins@umit.maine.edu » Tue Jul 18, 2006 10:31 am

I'd really like SSH because we keep the ReadyNAS in a secure environment without web browsers. There is currently no way for me to get admin access to the unit because I can't use a web browser. I'm trying to get them to change the browser issue but for now (and the past) I have had to just trust that things are ok if I don't get any emails from the machine. Having SSH would help tremendously.

I read yoh-dah saying to expect this Q2. Can you tell us what month that is? For us Q2 has passed.

Thanks,

Steve

Finger, too

Postby mg » Tue Jul 18, 2006 2:40 pm

Add me to the list of SSH requesters.

ALSO - how about finger (logged on user list) support?

Here's what happens now:

With finger, we could get a list of users so we would know whom to shoo before doing a reboot.

finger only works to list users logged into the box, not accessing the box through some sort of mount.

Although finger wouldn't be bad (I would use it in a shell script to monitor X6 FrontView connections and kick them out as necessary), what MG is looking for can probably be accessed with the various Windows "net" suite of commands. Drop to a command prompt and type net. I'm not a Windows user, so I can't give you specific commands, but something like "net share", "net session", or maybe "net view" will give you what you want. Hit Google and do a few searches.

Hmm, wouldn't the best place to check all NAS connections be on the NAS itself, as opposed to checking all the individual Windows clients?

P.S. There have been other requests to view active connections on the NAS (by protocol/file/etc). Either in FrontView or via SSH shell commands (netstat, Samba net file/net session, etc?).
