RAIDiator 3.00b5-p1-T1 Release Notes

This is our 4th public beta "b5" for our RAIDiator 3 release. We'll retain the same release notes from our previous beta and will denote new changes in green.

Our typical beta release warning applies to this release. Please do keep in mind that this is still a test release, and some things may not work as advertised, and some things (hopefully not) may go wrong. We ask that if you choose to use this release that you regularly backup your data and that you do not put this release in a production environment.

Please send feedback to this beta release in our Beta section of the Forum. To install the Beta, you will need to download the image and perform a Local update. The image can be downloaded here:

------------
CHANGES
------------

New FrontView UI
Dynamic menus allow you to go straight to the tab you wish instead of having to click the menu first. Services and Volumes are now main menus. Clock setup is now moved to the System menu. Admin Password moved to Security menu.

Scheduled Power-off

This works for all ReadyNAS systems, allowing you to power-off the ReadyNAS at a set weekly schedule. The option is available in the new System/Power Management tab.

Scheduled Power-on
Works in conjunction with the Scheduled Shutdown feature. This feature is available only for Rev B X6/600 and NV systems. The option is available on Rev B X6/600 upon upgrade to this release. The NV can experience a condition where it will not power on if at the time of the scheduled power-on, there is no power supplied to the NV. The only work-around for this is to release the clock battery on the main board for 5 secs. Instructions on how to do this will be provided. However, the power-on option is not provided for the NV by default – you will need to download an add-on to enable this option due to this potential for system lockup. If you understand this limitation, you can download the add-on at http://www.infrant.com/download/addons/ ... upport_0.1 . The option is available in the new System/Power Management tab.

Disk Spin-down
You can now set a disk inactivity timeout to allow your disks to go into spin-down mode. Due to the requirement for cooling the power supply which must be on during spin-down mode, the fan cannot be turned off. The fan will run at slower speed as the temperature of the disks lower. The effect of spinning down disks will reduce power consumption from 55W to 35W in idle mode. The option is available in the new System/Power Management tab.

Quieter Seagate Operation
Seagate disks will now run 5C hotter before fan speed increases due to better thermal specs of these drives.

Support for 750 GB Disks
You can now use up to 4 x 750 GB disks. RAIDiator will limit usage to 682 GiB per disk. 750 GB disks are equivalent to 698 GiB *, so 16 GiB out of each disk will remain unused. This limitation may be removed in the final 3.00 release. * GB = 1000^3, GiB = 1024^3.

VLAN Support
The ReadyNAS can now work in a VLAN network. The option is now available in the Network/Ethernet tab.

Users and Multiple Groups
Users can now belong to multiple groups allowing for increased flexibility in share access management.

New Streaming Services
Included in this release are Slim Server (now embedded) and iTunes Streaming service (allowing for iTunes applications to stream straight from the ReadyNAS).

TwonkyMedia Enhancement
Now you can separately assign a share and folder to music, video, and pictures instead of having one share contain all 3 media files. These options are only available when you install the TwonkyMedia add-on.

Bonjour Support
AFP, FrontView, Printers, and Slim Server now available over Bonjour for easier instantiation of these services.

IPP Printing Support
In conjunction with Bonjour, IPP Printing support allows for more seamless printing service for Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Better Web Server Functionality
A new HTTP/S option allows redirection of HTTP/S access to a specified share. For instance, if you have a share called "album", you can have http://myhost requests redirected to http://myhost/album automatically so that your guests will not see your ReadyNAS share listing that they would normally see. You also have the option to enable/disable password requirement for this share regardless of what security mode you've selected. This option is available in the Services/Standard File Protocols tab.

WebDAV
With a WebDAV client, you can now drag & drop files over an Explorer type view to the ReadyNAS over LAN or WAN (with appropriate port forwarding). Use of WebDAV disables the standard simple Web File Manager. This option can be enabled on a per-share basis in the HTTP/S share access tab.

FTP as Backup Destination
An FTP server can now be specified as a backup destination for your ReadyNAS shares.

Better Backup Support for Windows
Non-standard characters are now supported, and incremental backups are now based on archive bit rather than timestamp to be closer in behavior to Windows.

Faster Mac Support
This release includes a nice performance boost over AFP. The performance should now rival performance over CIFS/SMB, but allow for the better filename and resource fork support expected in a Mac environment.

Faster FTP Support
This release includes a nice performance boost for FTP. FTP performance should now be close to that of CIFS/SMB.

Renamable USB Flash & Disks
You can now specify a more user friendly name to your USB devices in place of the default USB_FLASH_1 and USB_HDD_1 names.

Better SMART Disk Warnings
Daily alerts will be sent whenever bad sector or ATA error counts increase on a disk.

Ethernet Speed and Duplex Settings
Option to set speed (MTU) and duplex mode now supported. This requires an add-on downloadable at http://www.infrant.com/download/addons/ ... tSpeed_0.1

Minimum Fan RPM Override Support
This option is now available for advanced users who will replace the standard fan. An add-on to enable this option can be downloaded at http://www.infrant.com/download/addons/ ... erride_0.1 . Use of add-on may void your warranty as it may overheat the fan driver circuitry on the main board if the setting is too low. Use of Infrant recommended fans and settings is highly encouraged.

Schedule Snapshot Deletion
Snapshots can now have a duration time. This allows you to take a snapshot of your volume, perform a backup, and delete the snapshot after the backup window is over. Not having a snapshot beyond the required time eliminates the write performance penalty when the snapshot is not needed.

Other Changes

WARNING - potential b5 problem

Postby yachtman » Fri Jul 21, 2006 12:56 am

Just a warning. I just installed beta b5 and it appears frozen. It rebooted and the power button light has been blinking continuously for 30 minutes. My inner self is saying "oh sh*te!"

I'll post my eventual result, as soon as it happens.

SOLVED

All is okay. I hard-powered-down the NV (no choice, power button unresponsive), and powered on. Took about 6-7 minutes and it was back online, with the new b5. Not sure what happened, but it was frightening.

To INFRANT, cheers! Your constantly improving this device is what sets you apart. Make some more products, and you've got a continuing customer right here!

Just curious, is 3.00 release still on tap for end of this month?

I'm salivating to upgrade our NV's (but cannot afford to test the betas)...

So, after reading these posts, I figured, "wouldn't this be fun to try myself seeing it's 03:20 EDT?" So I attempted the upgrade myself, but for giggles I decided to select "shutdown and poweroff" vs "shutown and reboot" to see if it would make a differnece for me. Selecting the "shutdown and poweroff" option worked fine for me...after the ReadyNAS went dark, I just powered it back on & about 8 minutes later all was well.

Of course, who's to argue I would have had a problem with rebooting rather than powering off, besides maybe Schrodinger and Heisenberg? "Works for me", as we say in NJ. :)

even safer

Postby junk67 » Sat Jul 22, 2006 8:45 am

I always give the NAS a quick reboot before installing new firmware.

so
1. reboot
2. install firmware
3. Shutdown and turn off device
4. push power button and power up

Worked fine.

b5 Works fine now

Postby yachtman » Sat Jul 22, 2006 11:38 am

b5 works great for me now. And the improvements to FTP--fixing the allowed read/write for read only users--all are now working as they should. I have not tested the suppossed speed improvements. Total and absolute praise for how fast (1 day) that Infrant, and especially ewok, got this fixed.

LEDs after beta install

Postby mlknez » Sun Jul 23, 2006 9:01 am

I installed the beta and all seemed to go okay. After installation finished, all of the LEDs (yellow and blue) are lit and stay on. I shut down, and restart, but LEDs remain on. This was not the way the unit functioned prior to update. Is this the way it is supposed to function now? Is there a fix? Thanks.

This will happen with the ReadyNAS 600. We'll have a fix for that in the next update.

I concur: it's probably safest to perform a normal shutdown and restart of the ReadyNAS before updating software. That way any sort of memory fragmentation or other long-runtime oddities that have a very small chance of causing a conflict or issue won't come into play.

As a policy, I always restart all devices and let them settle for a couple of minutes further *before* performing firmware updates.

I'm curious what the FTP performance boost entails?

Also, has anyone tested the 3.0 beta with TwonkyMedia to make sure it's fully compatible?

Lastly, I read from another thread that 3.0 release is currently scheduled for August? I'm eagerly awaiting it...

I've been running Twonky Media on each of the 3.0 betas without a problem, although I was only using it for video and not music.

Power Management

Postby ericdano » Sat Jul 29, 2006 10:25 am

I installed the latest Beta on my ReadyNAS NV, and I love it. Works great.

I noticed that if you manually shutdown the NAS, and it's scheduled to wake up the next day, it doesn't do that. IE: I shut it down manually last night, and it was scheduled to startup at 8am and did not.

Is that a bug? Or feature? Or does manually shutting it off override power management?

It would be nice to perhaps have a check box or something to enable the device to continue to use the schedule in Power Management if you wanted it to.

This is actually done purposely to avoid the NAS from attempting to wake up when there's a no power. That would render your NAS permanently asleep until you to take out the battery and re-insert it to wake it back up.
