Moving Data

Postby Vaughn » Tue Nov 14, 2006 11:41 am

1 question & 1 problem:

A. Question: Using windows explorer I 'cut and pasted' a non-shared folder with several sub-folders into another non- shared folder (but different shared trees). All data was on the NV +. In other words I was moving my files/data around on the same drive. I'm guessing the move of the top-folder involved about 115GB and took approx. 5 hours.
Is there a better way of moving data amongst folders on the box, especially when all the data resides under the mgmt of the NV?

B. Problem: Set up the email notification in Frontview (2 mailboxes) and did a test several times. It says it sent it but I never received either one of them. Also tried to email myself logs, but never received them either. Any ideas?

I'm on the latest firmware.

You guys have been really good in the past--hopfully you've got an answer for me.

The backup manager will copy data locally from share to share. Using the correct source and destination paths, you could copy files from one share to another without going over the network,

Check your spam mailboxes for the emails. Do you have an SMTP server configured in Frontview? Has email from the NAS ever worked?

cool.

Got the email to transmit--thanks. BUT, I can download logs in zip format OK, but when I send them via email Winzip says it's not in a proper format. Any ideas? Same logs.

Tried the backup; the path is giving me fits. What's the format for the path (i.e. how much does your OS need to know)? I've tried a full path, partial path, etc. and it still keeps coming back as invalid.
Can you give me a path format for both source and destination (if they are different).

Thanks.

Try downloading the logs, then sending them to yourself in an attachment. It's possible that your mail server is mangling the zip file.

You would need to select the source and destination share in the dropdowns, then enter the relative path from the root of the share. So, if you wanted to copy the contents of "mysourcedir" in the "source" share to "mydestdir" in the "dest" share, you'd select "source" and "dest" in the appropriate dropdowns, then enter "mysourcedir" and "mydestdir" in the path text fields.

Thanks.
Email issue. I downloaded the logs then copied the zip file into an email and sent it to myself. All OK. Seems the problem is when I hit your button to "Send all Logs". BTW my email and website is on Yahoo. Any more ideas? :D

Moving/Backing up data: OK, so on the path's I only need the top most folder name, no //'s to get to the folder to be moved?

Hi,

I have the same move data/backup issue, but in my case i'd like to move data from a public share to a private home share. Only problem is, that it seems that i can only do this the other way around (from private home share to public share) ?

Please help!

thanks,
Kris

Kris, you might want to post this as a new topic. I'm not sure the 'pro's' will see/respond to this since it is 5 months old.

This feature is not available in the current firmware release. You'll need to access both shares on a client machine and copy the files over the network.

Mass data moving

Postby kpurcell » Fri May 04, 2007 6:45 pm

This is a great tip! I was moving files from one share to another and it was taking 14 hours for 60 gigs since I guess it was going across my network and back. Pretty slow via WiFi.

About your second Issue you might want to contact your ISP since some ISP (like mine) stop mail servers from operating through a home subscriber line.
