How to access home shares via rsync?

Postby DavidB » Sat Jan 13, 2007 6:59 pm

I can use the rsync protocol to access the generic shares, but an attempt to access even my own share results in
Code: Select all
@ERROR: Unknown module '[user]'
even when supplying 'user's name and password. What gives?

This is for my backup solution, which needs to be driven from outside the NAS (backing up to an assortment of USB/firewire drives).

Incidentally, the inability of admin to access user shares under AFP (CIFS isn't an attractive option for backups: we're a mainly OS X shop and need full compatibility) is a pain...

Currently, home shares are only exported over CIFS. The next release will make them available over NFS, however.

After all the great documentation and recommendations on using rsync to backup NAS to NAS I find this out... please revise your rsync how-to document to make note of this for the next reader. And make it say Netgear somewhere too I guess...

Are there any plans for this type of functionality? I can rsync all other shares, but not the user folders.

My options are CIFS and NFS - what is the recommended protocol and are there any special considerations? This will eventually be an off-site nightly backup over a T1 WAN link between two 1100's.
Thanks for any advise.

We may add rsync access to home shares in a future release.

If you are using the backup manager, you can select "All Home Shares" as the source and an rsync server as the destination, performing a push-type backup to the offsite 1100.
