How to setup remote access with ReadyNAS Remote
There are three things that set ReadyNAS Remote apart from any other form of remote access — first, it’s simple to setup — there are no complicated router setups to deal with; second, with ReadyNAS Remote, you simply drag & drop files with File Explorer or Finder over CIFS/SMB — there’s no need to learn or start a different file manager, or deal with a clunky web interface; and lastly, all file permissions and share security settings are retained – just like you were on a LAN.
OK, there’s also item four — all data are transmitted securely over an encrypted tunnel, so your data stays away from snooping eyes as it transfers to and from the ReadyNAS. Sounds good so far, right?
So let’s take a look at what we need to do.
First, the requirements. You’ll need to be running RAIDiator 4.1.5+ for the ReadyNAS Duo/NV+/1100/600/X6 and RAIDiator x86 4.2.4+ for the ReadyNAS Pro.
- Install the ReadyNAS Remote software on your PC or Mac. This is the software that makes the ReadyNAS look like it’s on a LAN to Windows or OS X, even when you’re in a different part of the world. At the end of the installation, you will need to create a ReadyNAS Remote user ID.
- Install ReadyNAS Remote add-on on the ReadyNAS, if it doesn’t already have it pre-installed. You will need to give access to the ReadyNAS Remote account that’s used on Windows or Mac from Step 1.
- Connect to the ReadyNAS from your PC or Mac, and start draggin & dropping!
Let’s get started.
Step 1 – Install the ReadyNAS Remote agent on your PC or Mac
First, download the ReadyNAS Remote agent for your PC or Mac.

Just follow the Wizard installer to completion. At the end, the ReadyNAS Remote agent will start automatically, giving you an opportunity to create a new ReadyNAS Remote user ID. You will need this user ID to give remote access to the ReadyNAS in the next step.
Once the user ID has been created, ReadyNAS Remote will automatically log in that user.
At this point, you will not have access to your ReadyNAS until you’ve allowed access to this user from the ReadyNAS. Let’s do this in Step 2.
Step 2 – Install ReadyNAS Remote add-on on the ReadyNAS
If the ReadyNAS Remote add-on is not already installed on your ReadyNAS, download the add-on for your ReadyNAS model here:
Install the add-on from the FrontView System→Update→Local page.
After the add-on has been installed, go to the Services→Installed Add-ons page.
Click on the Manage ReadyNAS Remote button to bring up the ReadyNAS Remote management page.
Here, we’ll enter the email address of the ReadyNAS Remote user created in Step 1 in the Lookup field to allow access to the ReadyNAS. Make sure to click Apply Settings to save the change.
Step 3 – Connect to the ReadyNAS from your PC or Mac
From the system tray in Windows, right click on the ReadyNAS Remote icon and select the Connect to ReadyNAS… option.
In OS X, the ReadyNAS Remote icon displays in the top right status bar. Click on the icon and select the Connect to ReadyNAS… option there.
You’ll see the ReadyNAS entry in your Windows File Explorer. You’ll see similar in the Finder for OS X.
Double-clicking on that brings you the familiar share listing that you will see in your LAN. You may be requested to enter the ReadyNAS user name and password to access the shares if they don’t have guest access enabled.
Now drag & drop to your ReadyNAS like you’ve never before, even if you’re no where in the vicinity of your ReadyNAS!
